A class of Northcote Intermediate students became the first school group to travel on the Northern Busway yesterday, after a special send off by North Shore Mayor Andrew Williams and Deputy Mayor Julia Parfitt.

The one off trip was won by student Rhys Kingaby, (pictured) as part of his prize for winning the busway design and win competition, which called on all North Shore intermediate students to design a promotional busway poster.

Rhys’ winning design impressed the judges, including the mayor, with his catchy slogan “Use the bus, much less fuss”.

Rhys’ class enjoyed a big day out with their charter escorting them to and from a special movie screening prior to their busway ride, followed by a picnic lunch stop at Northhead.

“It was great to see Rhys and his classmates learning about the Northern Busway”, said Mayor Williams.

“These students are our public transport users of the future.”

In addition to the bus charter prize, Northcote Intermediate will receive $1000 to spend on school equipment of their choice.

Star artist Rhys also received a $50 book voucher and will experience special guest status at the Northern Busway opening in February.

The 300 million dollar Northern Busway is New Zealand’s first busway. An opening celebration will be held on February 2, 2008 with live bands, food, street entertainers, and a fun walk from Smales Farm to Akoranga stations.
