Wheels start to turn for bus lane project
Bus lanes will be introduced on Remuera and St Johns roads following a decision by Auckland City Council’s Transport Committee.
Committee chairperson Councillor Ken Baguley says the decision confirms the council’s continued commitment to deliver convenient and attractive travel choices for Aucklanders.
“The bus lanes on Remuera and St Johns roads will help provide a reliable bus service with consistent journey times, allowing buses to keep to published timetables,” says Mr Baguley.
“Remuera and St Johns roads form a key route connecting the eastern suburbs with Newmarket and the CBD. As well as being more reliable, the bus lanes will reduce journey times along the route by around two minutes in the morning peak and one minute in the evening peak.”
“The plan approved by the committee is a revised version of the original design, developed in collaboration with the local community through the consultation process,” says Mr Baguley.
The bus lanes will link existing and planned bus routes in Newmarket and the CBD, including the council’s Central Connector project.
Construction is planned to start in April, and is expected to take several months to complete.
The 4.5km of new bus lanes will add to the council’s existing 27km bus lane network.
