Rushing duplication of Harbour Crossing Dreadful

Press Release: Rushing the duplication of the Manukau Harbour Crossing is a dreadful decision.

With rapidly rising oil prices and growing concerns about climate change, it's absurd that the Government is prioritising a motorway duplication that will induce massive traffic growth.

Other cities staging international events know that the most effective and efficient mode to transport large numbers of people is rapid public transport...

- Sydney, 2000 Olympics: New Olympic Park Station and the rail link

- Paris, 1998 Soccer World Cup: New underground rail line and Stadium station

- South Africa, 2010 Soccer World Cup: The Gautrain high speed railway

The attached letter sets out the main reasons why we should not rush into the duplication of the Manukau Harbour Crossing.

The Manukau Harbour Crossing doesn't make sense given its 8 lanes of traffic won't fit with the planned 4 lane Western Ring Route tunnel.

Minister Annette King has it wrong when she says more motorways will make Auckland more vibrant and easier to get around. The end result is more traffic that excerbates Aucland's lack of community and soul, and a city that has dirty air, is unsafe to walk or cycle around, unpleasant to work in and suffers from a woefully underfunded public transport system.
