Shore youth have a strong voice

North Shore City Mayor, Andrew Williams and Deputy Mayor, Julia Parfitt, took the opportunity to discuss youth issues and council meeting procedures with members of Shore Youth Council this week.

The youth council consists of 37 young people, mostly year 12 and 13 students, representing 12 schools across North Shore City.

North Shore City Mayor, Andrew Williams, says the youth council is a great way to promote the voice of North Shore youth.

“The youth council ensures our young people have a say in the future of the city and its place in the region,” he says.

“It’s fantastic that the youth council has taken the initiative and is putting together a submission to the Annual Plan and one to the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance.

“This is an important way to guarantee that the issues, needs and perspectives of North Shore young people are heard when decisions are made about their city.”

The Shore Youth Council has been in existence since 2001 and aims to be a conduit for information from young people to Council and other decision makers, to distribute information and identify issues for young people, and come up with solutions that they can deliver.
