Flick that switch off, says North Shore Mayor

North Shore City Mayor Andrew Williams has issued a reminder to flick that light switch off when you leave the room.

His appeal today follows a similar message from The Major Electricity Users Group, which wants people at home and in small businesses to cut down on power use, to help reduce spot prices for industry and lower the odds of winter blackouts.

Water storage levels in the hydro generating system are less than they should be for this time of the year, and are trending downwards after a long dry summer.

Mayor Andrew Williams has asked staff in the council’s Takapuna head office and throughout the city to do their bit to help avert a winter power crisis – and help save council costs.

“The council has an ongoing cost and power saving programme in place, and we are continuing to make great progress in saving power by using some clever technology and systems. We even use gas from the Rosedale wastewater treatment plant to power up the plant itself. But we need everyone at work and at home to be constantly aware of the big and little ways to save power.

“We can all make a contribution - if we don’t it will hit us not only in our wallets . It could also mean cold showers and electricity outages, neither of which we would want during winter. So everyone should be doing their bit to reduce consumption," says Mayor Williams.
