Autumn drizzle didn’t prevent 120 children from having a brilliant day out on Kids Bike Day at Onepoto Domain last Wednesday.
The free event for 7 to 12 year olds was run by North Shore City Council and Bigfoot Adventures, to encourage and develop active cycling and to promote cycle safety skills in a fun and stimulating environment.
Robin Clarkson (pictured with MC Jo Holley), 7, of Browns Bay, was the lucky grand prize winner of a brand new Avanti Black Thunder bike, thanks to sponsors Avantiplus Wairau Park, who also provided helmet and bike checks for every entrant.
Celebrity MC Jo Holley kept the crowd in high spirits throughout the day with dozens of spot prize giveaways, including t-shirts and first aid kits, while spreading cycle safety messages and tips to the participants and their parents.
Council transport communications advisor Monique Orme said the participants learnt many lifelong cycling skills on the day.
“The kids took home some very important cycle safety messages, including ‘Be Safe Be Seen’, and ‘Stay Alive Stay 1.5.’ They were also taught practical bike maintenance skills, and brushed up on road rules and safe cycling with the help of police education officers.”
Participants went through a series of six modules, including bike maintenance, straight line and zig zag riding, an obstacle course, follow the leader activity and road rules.
Every entrant received a special goody bag to take home, filled with cycle safety activity books and other safe cycling goodies and information.
Kids Bike Day has been running in North Shore City annually since 2002, and due to popularity has now grown to two events per year.
