Take The Bus On Us

Take the bus on us

For immediate release: Friday 30 May 2008

Environment Bay of Plenty and Tauranga City Council are giving residents the opportunity to “take the bus on us”.

Thursday 5 June is World Environment Day and to celebrate all bus travel will be free on all Bay Hopper routes all day.

The aim is to encourage people to kick the carbon habit and try more sustainable travel options.

Regional Land Transport Committee chairman Andrew von Dadelszen said the initiative supports Environment Bay of Plenty’s and Tauranga City Council’s drive to get more people on the buses more often.

“Take the bus on us will reward our loyal passengers who have made sustainability part of their lifestyle and it also gives everyone in Tauranga the opportunity to give buses a go,” said Mr von Dadelszen.

Passenger numbers in Tauranga from July 2007 until March 2008 were up 21 per cent on the same period the previous year.

“Now that petrol is up to $2 a litre we are hoping more people will look at travelling by bus, which is sustainable, affordable and increasingly convenient,” said Mr von Dadelszen.

This offer also applies to the new number 12 service leaving The Lakes hourly starting from 7.10am arriving in the CBD at 7.40am via Greerton and Tauranga Hospital. The offer excludes the Tauranga to Whakatane service via Te Puke.

New look bus timetables, one for each route, will be available on World Environment Day for free.  Ask your driver for a timetable on the day.

The “take the bus on us” initiative is funded by Environment Bay of Plenty, Tauranga City Council and Bayline Buses.
