Improvements to Western Springs outer fields
Auckland City Council is planning to sand carpet the Western Springs outer sports fields to provide a better quality, year-round playing surface that can also be used for parking in summer.
Work is expected to start in November this year. The work is being staged over two years so that half of the fields are always open for the public to use.
In preparation for this project, the council is starting work on installing new stormwater drainage next week, as well as upgrading Stadium Road.
Chairperson of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee, Councillor Greg Moyle, says while the council appreciates the planned work will cause some disruption to people who use the fields, the improved surface will benefit everyone once completed
“The combination of these works will deliver much-improved sports fields, and we believe it will be a short term loss for a long term gain,” says Mr Moyle.
Work on installing stormwater drainage begins on Tuesday, 3 June and is expected to take eight weeks.
During work hours (7am to 5pm weekdays), the lower section of the footpath through the park linking the Bullock Track to Western Springs Lakeside Park will be closed but there will still be access over the playing fields.
The upgrade of Stadium Road starts on Monday, 9 June 2008 and is expected to take six weeks, depending on weather.
The improvements will allow pedestrians to move more safely to and from the playing fields, the stadium and Western Springs Lakeside Park.
The upgrade of the road will be staged so that pedestrian and vehicle access is maintained at all times.
