Residents asked to give bins a go

Residents asked to give bins a go

Auckland city residents are being asked to try their new blue-lidded 240-litre recycling bins, from 30 June when the new recycling service starts, before deciding they cannot physically manage them.

“We are asking people to try the 240-litre recycling bin first,” says Councillor Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, chairperson of the City Development Committee.

“In special circumstances where people cannot physically manage to get the 240-litre recycling bin to the kerbside, the council will look to provide a 120-litre bin instead for recyclables. Council officers will assess requests for smaller bins on a case-by-case basis.

“A limited number of smaller 120-litre recycling bins have been ordered but will not be available before end of August this year. This gives people a chance to try the larger bins first to see if they can manage.”

The new recycling service, which sees the weekly blue crate collection replaced by a 240-litre wheelie bin collected on a fortnightly basis, will collect all plastic containers from the kitchen, bathroom and laundry marked with the symbols 1-7, aluminium and steel cans, glass bottles and jars, milk and juice cartons, and paper and cardboard together in the one bin.

“Being a wheelie bin, the new recycling bins are able to be wheeled along, rather than carried to the kerbside. This is in line with international best practice and should make it easier for most people to get involved in recycling,” says Mr Lotu-Iiga.

Residents are reminded that the new service is a fortnightly collection and residents do not need to wait until their bin is full before placing it out for collection.

Residents from within Auckland city can call 09 379 2028 if they have any questions about the new recycling service.

Auckland City Council call centre staff will not take requests for 120-litre bins until after the new service has started on 30 June.
