Poetry comes to the street in Howick

Howick Library is bringing poetry to the street in celebration of Montana New Zealand Poetry Week this month.

Poetry Chalk Walk and Readings is just one of the events aimed at taking poetry off the page and to the people. On Friday 18 July, from 10:30 to 11:30am, members of the public are invited to write their favourite 10 lines of poetry in chalk on the pavement outside the Howick Information Centre.

At the same time they can listen to poetry recitals by established Manukau poets: Alan Papprill, Bronwyn Bryant, Siobhan Harvey, Riemke Ensing and Kirsten Warner, outside Readaway Books.

Alternatively from 11 to 18 July poetry lovers can write their favourite poetry on a card and peg it to Howick Library’s poet tree. This community creation will ‘grow’ as it tours other Manukau Libraries.

Join library staff for the announcement of the inaugural winners of the Bernard Gadd Memorial Poetry Prize on Friday 18 July at 12 noon. This annual competition commemorates the late Manukau poet and continues his support of poetry in the city.
