Wait For Taputeranga Marine Reserve Almost Over

MEDIA RELEASE EMBARGOED UNTIL 5 PM THURSDAY, 31 JULY 2008

Long Wait For Taputeranga Marine Reserve Almost Over

"Seventeen years of hard work is almost is almost over for the Wellington South Coast Marine Reserve Coalition" Colin Ryder, convener of the Coalition, said today.

The Coalition was the co-applicant, along with the Wellington Branch of the Forest and Bird Protection Society, for the Taputeranga Marine Reserve.

"We welcome the announcement by the Minister of Conservation, Hon Steve Chadwick, that the establishment of the Marine Reserve has passed its last legal hurdle and received the assent of the Governor-General," Mr Ryder
said.

"7 September, when the Marine Reserve is officially opened, will be an important day for the city from so many differing aspects; scientifically, educationally, ecologically and commercially."

"Taputeranga Marine Reserve will be the equivalent of a national park on the city's boundary, and joins Karori Wildlife Sanctuary as a key part of Wellington's ecological infrastructure."

"The creation of the reserve has only been made possible by the support and active involvement of many enthusiastic and committed individuals. It has been a long, complex and sometimes frustrating journey, but the end result will be well worth the effort," Mr Ryder said.

"What has buoyed the members of the Coalition the most, though, has been the overwhelming and consistent support of the Wallington community. Along with the marine life, the community will soon begin to reap the benefits."

"On 7 September we look forward to celebrating the establishment of the reserve, and going out of existence."
