Slippage dangers in Glenfield

Slippage dangers in Glenfield

Below is an email I sent to North Shore Mayor, Andrew Williams, following my visit to the latest slippage site in Mulberrry Place, Glenfield.  The email asks that the Mayor instructs council staff to review all possible slippage sites in Glenfield – especially because of  the topography of Glenfield which has many steep sections built on over the years,

David Thornton

Deputy Chairman

GLENFIELD COMMUNIYY BOARD

Dear Andrew

I today visited Mulberry Place in Glenfield where some residents have been forced to evacuate their homes because of slip dangers apparently caused by the current storm situation

I was extremely concerned to learn that stormwater problems in Mulberry Place were reported to the Council more than two years ago.

On my visit to Mulberry Place today I noted that there was considerable damage to the road surface and have been told that the road has been deteriorating for some time.

I understand that residents have previously contacted council staff and therefore there should be some record of these earlier complaints.

While I appreciate that the Council has now called in EQC  I am concerned that previous complaints have not been advised to the Glenfield Community Board whose job it is to monitor councils performance within the local community.

This has been an exceptional storm but the topography of Glenfield make it particularly prone to landslips.

I also understand that in the case of Mulberrry Place the affected building were constructed some years ago on a landfill some five metres deep.

Can I therefore ask you to urgently ask council staff to review all property files in appropriate areas of Glenfield to identify all properties which are located on steep land , and to visit all such sites so that we can allay many of the concerns which are circulating in the community.

I know that you will give this matter your urgent attention.

regards

David Thornton
Deputy Chairman
GLENFIELD COMMUNITY BOARD
