Violin Virtuoso Makes Difference For Poor Children
Violin Virtuoso Making A Difference For Poor Children
For
many years, gifted violinist and singer-songwriter Peter
Shurley has been wowing audiences with his passionate and
inspirational performances.
The Tasmanian-based musician,
well-known to New Zealand fans, is embarking on another free
concert tour of New Zealand on behalf of TEAR Fund child
sponsorship.
Shurley is recognised as one of Australia’s most popular and sought-after gospel artists and has long been an advocate for poor children in the developing world, through TEAR Fund’s child sponsorship partner, Compassion International.
Shurley regards New Zealand as a `home
away from home’. “I just love New Zealand audiences,
they are a lot like Tasmanians,” he says.
Through his
music, Shurley weaves complex sound-scapes taking listeners
on a journey from inward contemplation to outward joy. He
draws on his classical roots as well as contemporary
influences which include Van Morrison and Don Henley of the
Eagles. His music will be set against a multi-media backdrop
which is sure to further connect the audience with his music
and he is well-known for engaging personality.
He describes his music as `middle-of-the-road’ but `there is something for everyone, young or old’ in the mix, from his vast repertoire which spans 16 CDs and almost two-decades. Most of the concerts will centre around his last album Still, but he will give New Zealand audiences a taste of his new album, which he plans to release in October. He will also play a variety of old favourites from his back catalogue including Indian Girl which he wrote after meeting the first child he sponsored.
Peter Shurley will visit a variety of towns and cities around the upper North Island. The concerts are free but donations are welcome.
