Drivers should avoid Kawakawa Bay slip area
Drivers are being warned there may be major delays on the main road into Kawakawa Bay so they should avoid using it unless travel is essential.
Movement is continuing in the area where a major slip occurred at the beginning of the month. Although there is no immediate risk of another major slip only one side of the road is open and there may be temporary closures to clear debris.
Manukau City Council Economic Director Rick Walden says drivers should avoid using the road if possible because they will experience delays.
“Safety measures are in place and we’re continuing to monitor the slip area. There is risk of another major slip if there is continuous heavy rain.
“If this happens and expert geotechnic advice tells us a bigger slip is likely the road will be closed,” Mr Walden says.
Alternative routes into the area are via State Highway 1 and State Highway 2 or Monument Rd / Sky High Rd / Hunua Rd and Paparimu Rd.
Electronic message signs with warnings and updates are up at each end of the slip area. There will be regular updates through the council call centre (phone 262 5104) and at www.manukau.govt.nz.
