Mobile library service continues
Auckland City Council's Community Services Committee has today recommended the continuance of the current mobile library service.
This will be considered by the full council at the Long Term Council Community Plan direction-setting meeting in November.
The mobile library service is a book bus that travels around Auckland city, stopping outside community and shopping centres, rest homes and pensioner housing communities.
The committee also made a $60,000 provision to refurbish the current vehicle when it is required, and has recommended the library investigate alternative ways of continuing to reach the needs of those who use the service, as well as future users.
Committee chairperson, Councillor Paul Goldsmith, says it would have been nice to have a new vehicle, but as the current bus is adequate, the committee decided it was best to retain it.
Mr Goldsmith also noted that technology was evolving so rapidly, such as audio books streamed through the internet, that there might be better ways to reach users in the future.
