It’s all happening in Auckland

Auckland City Council is gearing up to put on a summer full of great events after spring kicked off with the hugely successful Auckland Heritage Festival and Air New Zealand Fashion Week.

The council will once again provide more than 60 free events for Aucklanders – as well as support some of our city’s other much-loved events and bring you new events, including the recently secured Louis Vuitton Pacific Series.

Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee chairperson, Councillor Greg Moyle, says he’s excited about what’s ahead.

“It’s shaping up to be a summer of family fun, set among our parks, harbour and other best assets – showcasing the best Auckland has to offer in terms of culture, music, art and sport. I encourage everyone to make the most of what’s on offer and celebrate what makes our city unique,” says Mr Moyle.

October kicks off with a celebration of Kiwi music at the Vodafone Music Awards, followed by the popular free Diwali Festival at its new location in the Viaduct Harbour. There’s also action on the football front with the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

November sees thousands cross the Waitemata during the adidas Auckland Marathon and Sovereign Harbour Crossing, and a free, family day out to start summer at the Parnell Festival of Roses.

Christmas comes to Auckland in December with the ever-popular Farmers Santa Parade and Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park, as well as the chance to share the magic of Christmas in your neighbourhood with the council’s community events.

Tennis is in the spotlight in January, with two top tournaments to keep fans entertained, plus 2009 kicks off with a huge array of free live talent during the Music in Parks series. For the first time, the council is also bringing Aucklanders a fantastic programme on and off the water to celebrate Auckland Anniversary Weekend, including the Auckland Seafood Festival and historic Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta.

February sees lanterns light up Albert Park for the annual Auckland Lantern Festival, weekly Movies in Parks, plus lots of action on the gulf. Our diverse cultures are celebrated during March with Pasifika Festival and the Auckland International Cultural Festival, as well as Auckland Festival 2009.
