Tomahawk Community Climate Change Workshop

MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

6 October 2008

Tomahawk Community Climate Change Workshop

On Sunday 12 October MWH will run a Climate Change Workshop with the community of Tomahawk/ Ocean Grove to help it evaluate the long-term risks it faces from climate change.

As a low lying community adjacent to the coast Tomahawk/ Coastal Grove faces obvious risks from climate change.

The workshop will involved presentations from experts on climate change and coastal processes and will use an established risk management framework to enable the community to identify the risks it faces from climate change, to evaluate these, and identify potential responses. The work is focused on the long-term risks (a 50-100 year timeframe) posed by climate change.

The Dunedin City Council has endorsed the workshop, although they will not be involved directly as it is an MWH project. MWH is a leading international consultancy with particular experience in infrastructure and environmental solutions. The workshop is a pilot project to test the effectiveness of using the risk management framework and a community-based approach for strategic climate change planning. If successful it will have applicability throughout New Zealand.
