Let Howick decide
Let Howick decide
Press release from Hamish Stevens
Howick Community Board member Hamish Stevens says the latest pronouncement from Manukau City’s Manua Whenua Forum shows what a waste of money Manukau City is.
The Howick Community Board at its meeting on 25 August decided unanimously that a small reserve in Picton Street (Howick’s main street) should be called Fencible Walk, in recognition of Howick’s early history. However council officers referred this to the Manua Whenua Committee – a council advisory group, and they have now come back with the name Te Ara o Owairoa.
Mr Stevens said this is exactly why we need to be rid of Manukau City. The people of Howick are totally capable of deciding on names for their reserves without the meddling of a group of unelected politically correct busy-bodies.
Mr Stevens said the Manua Whenua Forum should butt out and leave this matter to the people of Howick. “The naming of reserves should be delegated to Community Boards as they are in the best position to reflect the wishes of the community”
The matter will be discussed at the Howick Community Board meeting on Monday night (20 October).
