Port Nelson Masked Parade Results

Port Nelson Masked Parade Results
October 17, 2008

The Port Nelson Masked Parade defied the threat of rain and provided a spectacle of colour and creativity in Nelson on Friday night.

Upper Moutere School won the $500 Supreme Group Award, for sound, mask performance and theme interpretation, with their choreographed entry based on Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. They also won the $150 Interesting Interpretation Award.

Coordinator Kim Merry said it was exciting to see more families, groups and businesses taking part, along with the strong showing from the region’s schools.

“It was great to see parents and teachers in mask, dancing to the beat rather than just walking alongside their kids,” he said. “The parade has developed a real heart, with the More FM Carnivale breaking down our usual social barriers and creating a really special atmosphere in the city.”

Pacifica dub band Mamaku Project had the crowd dancing, while the ferris wheel, face painting, balloons, street theatre and other attractions kept the closed off area thronged with people until 10pm.
