Free gardening
classes
Summer is almost here, and people in Manukau have an opportunity to learn gardening techniques for free, while growing a garden of fruits and vegetables, as part of a new gardening initiative.
Being organised by Manukau Parks, the “Growing for Health” programme will provide participants with everything from a gardening plot and an instructor, to tools, gardening book, seeds and plants.
“They can keep the produce and they’ll even get a diary to record their progress,” says Robert Findlay, Manager – Parks Recreation.
Beginning next month, the programme will be initially introduced at:
Papatoetoe: Middlemore Reserve and Stadium Reserve
Mangere: Walter Massey Park (Mangere East) and Old School Reserve
“We are setting up teaching gardens at these reserves and a plot will be allocated to participants to grow vegetables for a season,” says Mr Findlay.
“The classes will offer basic husbandry skills from seed germination through to harvesting.
“Those with good gardening skills can volunteer to be an instructor in this programme.”
Any interested group, family or individual over 18 can apply. For more information about joining the programme as a learner or a teacher, please contact Parks Booking Officer on 09 2637100 ext 8750 or email colin.foster@manukau.govt.nz.
