Celebrate Christmas in your own backyard

Auckland City Council
Media release

24 November 2008

Celebrate Christmas in your own backyard

Christmas is just around the corner and Auckland City Council is celebrating with eight free community Christmas events for everyone to enjoy.

Onehunga Christmas Lights brings a twinkling start to the festive season on 5 December with local music groups, carol singing, face painting, a visit from Santa and the traditional lighting of Jellicoe Park’s Christmas tree.

A Christmas tradition in Auckland for decades, Carols by Candlelight events take place during December in Ponsonby, Three Kings, St Heliers, Balmoral and Waiheke Island – giving Aucklanders the chance to sing their hearts out to their favourite festive tunes.

Otahuhu joins the Christmas festivities on 13 December with Christmas performances, face painting, clowns and a special visit from Santa.

Avondale spins its own Christmas web with the unique Carols by Spiderlight event on 14 December. This multicultural celebration includes carol singing, local performances and more

Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee chairperson, Councillor Greg Moyle, encourages everyone to come along.

“These events are a great opportunity for families and friends to get into the spirit of Christmas with others in their local community,” says Mr Moyle.

The council is proud to provide more than 60 free events this summer.

Community Christmas events are proudly provided by Auckland City Council with support from NZCT, RadioWorks and local community groups.
