Bad Fire Safety Habits Are Killing Aucklanders

Auckland’s Fire Commander, Brian Butt says “firefighters are frustrated with home fires occurring in greater Auckland which are compromising the safety of our people and their communities”.

In recent months 6 Aucklanders have been killed in their own homes by fire. Brian says “the home is a place where we should not only feel safe but be safe”.

We have seen too many household fires caused by electrical appliances being misused and/or poorly maintained, however most are caused by people not paying enough attention when cooking, heating their homes, smoking or using candles said Brian.

The past week events saw two more home fire fatalities. Deaths, which were truly avoidable

It happens so quickly, in the time it takes to make a cup of tea, or go to the toilet, a fire occurring in other parts of the house can trap you in your own home.

Commander Butt urges self responsibility….. He said investigations revealed that smoke alarms were installed in only one of the homes

Both deaths involved elderly residents one in Howick and the other in Papakura, The Fire Service undertakes a great deal of fire safe education with members of the elderly community, any groups or organisations wanting a visit or a presentation on safe fire practices for seniors need only ring their local Fire Station to arrange a visit.

It is not good enough says Butt... We all have a responsibility for our own safety. A New Zealanders home is their castle. Kiwi’s readily use their skills to maintain and improve their homes as well as diligence to protect it from burglary. All to often however, the danger of fire is overlooked. You should be safe in your home and that includes being safe from fire.
