Green light to consultation on cycling and walking

Green light to consultation on cycling and walking strategies

4 December 2008

North Shore City residents and interest groups will have their say in early 2009 on new strategies for cycling and walking, following decisions today by the council’s Infrastructure and Environment Committee.

The committee has given the go ahead to consultation being undertaken for both the draft Strategic Cycle Strategy and draft Walking Strategy.

Chair of the Infrastructure and Environment Committee, Councillor Ken McKay says the council’s first walking strategy visualises a city where people choose to walk more, and where walking is accessible, safe, pleasant and convenient.

In terms of cycling, Councillor McKay says that since the introduction of the 2003 Strategic Cycle Plan, significant progress has been made towards providing comprehensive cycling facilities around North Shore City.

“Safety is the number one priority of these strategies, and will be of paramount importance when we consider any new cycle lane proposals to add to our existing 49 kilometres of cycle lanes and paths.

“We look forward to receiving the public’s input during the consultation phase for both strategies, to ensure the council is delivering what is best for the North Shore community,” says Councillor McKay.

The committee also decided that the proposed on-road cycle lanes along Lake Rd from Esmonde Rd to Hauraki Corner will have a green textured surface where appropriate, with textured or wide lane markings between the cycle lanes and vehicular lanes.

Council staff will investigate alternate options for the location of a “pocket” park to coincide with the Lake Rd upgrade.
