Performers take to the street with licence to entertain

Auckland City Council has developed a street performance policy to manage and encourage diverse, high quality street performance in Auckland’s public spaces.

The policy will help to provide greater clarity for performers, businesses and residents around the requirements for street performance.

“Street performance plays an important role in the vitality of Auckland city and offers entertainers the chance to gain experience and develop a public profile,” says Councillor Greg Moyle, chairperson of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee.

“Clarifying expectations and directing the right activity, to the right location, at the right time, will encourage and enable a range of street level activity to take place in our city.”

Unrestricted 12-month licences will be issued free-of-charge to street performers who agree to comply with the criteria outlined in the code of conduct, which seeks to balance a performer’s creative needs with everyday activities taking place in the city.

The policy provides a fair system for the use of optimum sites and directs performers to appropriate locations for particular activities, such as special sites identified for pavement art and areas designated for acts that attract large audiences.

A street performance handbook is available for download on Auckland City Council’s website to help performers, residents and retailers understand how the new system works.
