More sand for summer

Auckland City Council Media release

15 December 2008

More sand for summer

People in the western bays have more sand on their local beaches, and more space for recreation this summer.

Auckland City Council has completed beach resanding projects at Pt Chevalier, Hamilton, Sentinel, Herne Bay, Blockhouse Bay, and Taylors Bay beaches.

Mayor of Auckland city, Hon. John Banks says it was great to be able to give those in the west of the city new beaches for summer. "I am sure given the recent good weather, these enhancements are already being well used and will continue to make a huge difference for our citizens."

Over time, wave erosion had resulted in the loss of sand from these beaches. This meant existing sea walls were unprotected and important recreational space had been lost.

The resanded beaches offer a number of benefits, including increased space for recreational activities at high tide, all tide access across dry sand beaches, and protection for the existing sea walls.

Work over the winter involved pumping a total of more than 20,000m3 of sand onto the beaches - and continues the success of the council's previous beach replenishment projects.
