Free Whanau Nui – Water Safety Lessons This Summer

With drowning being the third highest cause of accidental death in New Zealand, Counties Manukau families are urged to take advantage of free ‘Whanau Nui Family Swim water safety and water confidence lessons’ which make a welcome return later this month.

The five free lessons provide a simple, positive, fun approach to teaching young ones how to keep safe in the water. Families will be taught vital survival and swimming skills, with a focus on the importance of supervision.

Injury Free Counties Manukau together with WaterSafe Auckland are funding the project. The lessons will be delivered at designated swimming centres across Counties Manukau by Swimsation, Swim Magic, Fulton Swim School, Swimgym and the Sandra Blewett Swim School. The programme runs from
19 to 23 January 2009.

More than 500 children and their caregivers throughout Manukau, Papakura and Franklin participated in last year’s programme.
