MAXX to the music at the Big Day Out


Festival-goers heading to Mt Smart on Friday 16 January for the annual music sensation The Big Day Out, can take the easy ride and hop aboard one of the efficient public transport to get them to and from the event. Major works to upgrade the rail network continue in most areas and passengers are advised to check MAXX on (09) 366 6400 or at www.maxx.co.nz, before travelling.


Ways to travel to the Big Day Out:

Train services

Special services will be running specifically to Penrose Station on the Southern Line from Britomart and Papakura. These services terminate at Penrose and should be used only for travel to the Big Day Out.

To get home, regular services will depart from Penrose to Papakura up until 1:10am, and from Penrose to Britomart up until 1:15am.

Britomart/Papakura to Penrose return tickets cost $10, otherwise normal fares apply. Tickets are available from Britomart Transport Centre, Papakura Train Station and onboard the trains. Passengers are advised that ticket checks will be in place at Penrose station.

The Western Line continues to be closed for the continued upgrade to the network and all scheduled rail services are replaced by rail buses. Special Western Line rail buses (drop off only) will be provided between Britomart and Waitakere from 10.30pm to 1.50am.

Bus services

A special Big Day Out express bus service will be in operation: the continuous service will operate departing from Real Groovy on Queen St from 9am until 2pm and will drop off on O'Rourke Road beside the stadium.

Return buses will depart from Mt Smart Stadium outside the Mt Smart Athletics Club continuously from 9.30pm until 1.30am returning to the St James Theatre, Queen St.

The fare for the service is $15 return ($10 one way) and tickets are available on the day at the bus stop. Cash fares only. No concession fares are available. Go Rider cards not accepted.

Northern Express services will operate to Albany and Constellation Stations departing Britomart Stop D1. Additional services will depart at midnight, 12:45am and 1:30am.


NiteRider buses will depart the Civic Theatre and St James Theatre from 1.00am to 3.00am with 10 routes across Auckland.


The Big Day Out features a number of international and local acts and is one of the biggest music events of the year therefore passengers are advised to leave plenty of time for their journey.
