Kaituna, Maketu Strategy Info Day Reminder

MEDIA RELEASE

Kaituna, Maketu Strategy Info Day Reminder

For immediate release: Monday 2 February 2009
Residents are reminded of the information day in Maketu on 10 February to find out more about the draft Kaituna River and Ongatoro/Maketu Estuary Strategy.

Environment Bay of Plenty Group Manager Rivers and Drainage Ken Tarboton said the information day was an opportunity for people to ask questions before giving their feedback on the draft strategy and its supporting documents.

“The information day will give people who have a connection to the river and estuary – whether it’s as a landowner, local resident, tangata whenua or a recreational user – an opportunity to ask questions they may have about the draft Strategy, in an informal and supportive environment,” Mr Tarboton said.

The information day will be held in Maketu on 10 February: at the Community Centre, in Wilson Road from 11am to 2pm; and at the Whakaue Kaipapa Marae in Maketu Road from 6pm to 8pm.

An information day was held in Te Puke on 29 January.

The draft Kaituna River and Ongatoro/Maketu Estuary Strategy was made public in November last year. People have until 18 February 2009 to give feedback on the draft Strategy, which of the possible actions they want carried out and their views on the option of diverting the Kaituna River to the Ongatoro/Maketu Estuary.

“Community input has formed the backbone of this draft strategy which provides a vision for the future of the Kaituna River and Ongatoro/Maketu Estuary.” Mr Tarboton said.

“We encourage people to come to the information days and have their say on the future vision and sustainable management of the river and the estuary through the feedback process.”
