Eastern beaches safe for swimming

Auckland City Council
Media release

5 February 2009

Eastern beaches safe for swimming

Auckland city’s Eastern beaches have been declared safe for swimming after water quality was temporarily affected at Okahu and Mission bays following on from power outages in the Eastern suburbs.

Health warning signs were removed earlier today from Kohimarama and St Heliers and all remaining signs on affected beaches will be removed this afternoon.

The free Waitangi Day Festival ’09 at Okahu Bay will go ahead as planned and the council invites Auckland residents and visitors to celebrate the holiday festivities and to make the most of Auckland’s beaches and harbours on Waitangi Day.

Members of the public are encouraged to join Ngati Whatua o Orakei at an official welcome at 9am. The entertainment continues with two stages of live music, plus children’s rides, traditional food, art, stalls and farm animals.

For updated information about water quality at Auckland city’s beaches, please visit www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/safeswim or call 0800 SAFESWIM (0800 723379) to get the latest test results.
