Infrastructure boost the answer to economic growth

MEDIA RELEASE
Infrastructure boost the answer to economic growth
For immediate release on 11 February 2009

“The Government’s $500 million infrastructure boost is a positive start towards stimulating economic growth throughout New Zealand’s regions,” said Local Government New Zealand President Lawrence Yule following today’s announcement.

“These projects, while nationally focused, will have spin-offs for communities through job protection and economic growth. However, we look forward to further investment in local government projects across a wide geographic spread to fully capitalise on the benefits available to communities.

“Local government has a crucial role in balancing the provision of world-class infrastructure to communities with ratepayers’ ability to pay. Infrastructure developments are essential for communities and if stopped, can have a negative impact on local economies and the country.

“The Government has recognised the link between maintaining and improving essential infrastructure with thriving communities. This package will not only fuel job growth, it will bring significant social and environmental benefits.”

Councils are currently carrying out community consultation for their 2009-19 Long Term Council Community Plans (LTCCPs). Within these plans are infrastructure investments of national interest led by local government including water, wastewater, broadband, tourism, roading and transport activities.

"Transport is one area where additional funding can make a huge difference to local economies. The Government’s commitment to funding roading projects already in the pipeline will have far-reaching benefits – both for New Zealanders’ today and future generations.

“A number of council projects are also in the “ready-to-go” category and fit the Government’s criteria for driving economic growth, but are dependent on further Government funding. We hope to see a second stage boost to infrastructure that will move these projects forward”, said Mr Yule.
