Get on your bike for a free breakfast

Grab your bike and head down to the Eastern Viaduct at the Viaduct Harbour (past the Maritime museum) on Wednesday, 18 February for Auckland City Council’s annual Go By Bike Breakfast. This free event is part of Bike Wise month and just one of the many events taking place across the country to celebrate cycling.

New Zealand elite road cycling champion Gordon McCauley will be joining the hundreds of cyclists expected to come along to the breakfast event. “Cycling is a great way to keep fit, meet new people and reduce your carbon footprint,” says Gordon.

“The event will allow like-minded people to come together and enjoy the entertainment, the free breakfast and connect with other cycle enthusiasts.”

The celebration runs from 6.30am to 9am and along with a free, tasty breakfast in a fantastic location, there will be a full programme of entertainment, activities and prizes including free bike checks, free spine checks, spin challenges, heaps of spot prizes and a great Avanti mountain bike to be won.

It doesn’t matter if you cycle a lot or a little, everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Frocks on Bikes will be attending, proving cycling doesn’t have to involve lycra – these ladies aim to put the beauty back into biking.

Cyclists who travel along Tamaki Drive, North-Western Cycleway or Dominion road can join an escorted cycle bus and be part of the peleton. Five time road cycle champ Gordon McCauley will head up the North-Western group so it’s a great opportunity to cycle with a record breaker.

Cyclists are encouraged to come along in fancy dress or to get together with their friends and colleagues and win a prize for the biggest group.

Attendees will be able to check out who is first past the post in the Urgent Couriers Commuter Challenge, as New Zealand celebrities race towards the Viaduct by car, bike and bus.

Family friendly Bike Wise events happening during February include the Kids Bike Ride at Western Springs on 19 February and a Learn to Ride afternoon at Potters Park, Balmoral on Thursday, 26 February.
