Accessible communication

Before I became the Mayor and since I became the Mayor, I have done everything I can to ensure there was no bar to access by the community to me firstly as a councillor and then as leader of this city.

I have put a very high premium to accessibility and communication to ensure the community has a sense that on any issue, people have the ear of their Mayor.

I've attempted to do this through, at times, excessively open access to the media, regular mayoral meetings in the community, fortnightly visits to schools around the city and this letter I send out on a weekly basis.

I'm aware of the powerful and direct nature of technology as a conduit for us as a community and as a city to keep in close contact and debate and discuss issues of concern and so I've taken up another one of these tools, and I've set  up my site on Facebook.

My eldest daughter, Samantha has suggested that I need to start "collecting friends" on Facebook as another way of ensuring I keep a dialogue open with the young people of the city.

I'd like you to come on my Facebook site and join up as a friend.  It will give you a chance to give me your honest views and opinions.  I'll look forward to reading your comments.

Enjoy the week!

Len Brown
Mayor of Manukau
