Trans-Tasman capacity growth for Queenstown

Media Release
13 February 2009

Capacity boost for Queenstown with more direct Trans-Tasman capacity from Air New Zealand

Weekly direct services from Australia to Queenstown will hit double figures this ski season, with 10 flights per week into the region.

Strong demand from Queensland has resulted in Air New Zealand adding an additional service from Brisbane taking the total from there to three per week, in addition to five services per week from Sydney and two from Melbourne.

“We’ve just commenced early-bird ski deals out of Australia and our confidence in Queenstown as a destination for Australians is showing good positive signs despite the current economic conditions,” says Air New Zealand General Manager Tasman Pacific Airline, Glen Sowry.

“We’ve seen interest from Australian travellers in the Central Otago region continue to strengthen over the years and we’re pleased to be able to meet that growth with additional services.”

The third service from Brisbane will operate on Mondays in July and August, in addition to the existing Thursday and Sunday services.

Utilising A320 aircraft, it takes the total number of trans-Tasman seats available per week into Queenstown to more than 1500. Air New Zealand has recently completed refitting the fleet with digital seat-back entertainment in both business and economy classes and RNP navigation technology to enable aircraft operations in inclement weather conditions.

Flight schedule for the 2009 ski season is as follows:
