Flat fares to be introduced on Tauranga buses

A fare system for Tauranga buses has been simplified and will be introduced on all services from 29 June 2009.

There are currently four zones covering Tauranga with fares ranging from $1.50 to $3 for adult cash passengers.

From 29 June 2009 there will be only two zone fares. Concessions for children under five, tertiary and school students and pensioners at peak times will remain in place.

Transport Committee Chairman Andrew von Dadelszen welcomed the move.

“Currently we have four zones and various concessions which can cause confusion for drivers and passengers when they board the bus. Our aim is to introduce a simpler fare structure which existing and new passengers can understand more easily. It will also be easier for drivers to gauge fares and will mean passengers can board buses quicker, he said.

Councillor von Dadelszen also noted that Tauranga bus fares had not been increased for seven years.

“Seven years ago we had 10 routes running once an hour. We now have 12 routes running every 15 to 30 minutes on most routes. Those services will run for longer hours on more days including weekends and public holidays (expect Christmas) from 29 June 2009. The fleet has also improved and from 29 June 2009 there will 21 new 35 and 40-seater, low floor buses serving Tauranga,” he said.

Concessions are 40 percent off for tertiary students, school students and over 65-year-olds travelling at peak times. SuperGold card holders travel for free on the buses off peak. Children under five travel for free.

Environment Bay of Plenty funds the region’s bus service and the decision to change the fares was made by its Transport Committee.
