New Stadium A Fitting Regional Showcase For Rugby World Cup
Hosting Rugby World Cup 2011 matches in Dunedin will provide significant global exposure for the region to a worldwide audience of billions, says Stadium Trust Chairman Malcolm Farry. “We are delighted at the opportunity for the region to host World Cup matches with high-calibre international teams and to participate directly in Rugby World Cup 2011.
“Rugby New Zealand 2011 has indicated its desire for the Dunedin matches to be played at the new Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza. At this stage they have allocated the matches to Carisbrook, but with the intention to use the Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza, provided it is operationally ready.
“We see significant upside to showcase the region to the expected global audience of billions via the new, iconic Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza. As New Zealand’s only fully-roofed, natural turf stadium we can provide optimum playing conditions regardless of the weather outside and a pleasant and enjoyable spectator experience for local and international fans.
“With recent progress in funding decisions and adoption of the plan change, the Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza is on track for completion in time for Rugby World Cup. We are planning for preliminary construction work to start on site within the next three months. That would have the Stadium ready approximately two months’ prior to Rugby World Cup kickoff,” says Mr Farry.
Dunedin will host three matches in 2011 including four of the Six Nations’ teams. Scotland plays the top European qualifier on Wednesday 14 September, England plays against the top European playoff winner on Saturday 24 September and Ireland plays against Italy on Sunday 2 October.
“These are great games for the region. Dunedin and Otago have a strong shared heritage with Scotland. Travelling England teams are always accompanied by loyal and enthusiastic fans. Ireland is the top Six Nations’ team. Plus, the playoff winner will have the opportunity to pit their skills against previous World Cup champions England.
“We look forward to extending our renowned southern hospitality to the international guests and giving the teams a rousing welcome in the new Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza,” says Mr Farry.
