Have Your Say on Albany's future

Have Your Say on Albany's future
Council Open Day to be held on 1 April

25 March 2009

North Shore City Council is seeking feedback on the future scope of Albany through its Long Term Council Community Plan (LTCCP) process and invites people to an Open Day on 1 April.

Since 1991, Albany’s population has risen from 41,400 to more than 78,000. By 2021, the population is expected to reach more than 98,000.

As a result of the ever growing population, Council is planning to build new community facilities in the area, but it would like to hear from locals on what projects they think should take first priority.

The Open Day will be held between 4pm and 8pm at Harbour Sport, Stadium Drive, Albany.

Two major projects are in the pipeline for Albany. They include a Community Board Area Library which is estimated to cost around $15 million as well as a Northern Recreational Aquatic facility, estimated at $10 million. Because of the funds required, only one facility can be built at a time.

Currently there are no aquatic facilities in Albany. The closest council-owned aquatic facility is the Takapuna Leisure Centre which has a 33 metre pool, or Glenfield Leisure Centre which has a 25 metre pool.

Council is also leasing temporary library space in Albany at Kell’s Drive.

Council staff will be on hand at the Open Day to explain the future scope of Albany and answer any of your questions. If you live in Albany, make sure you have your say on what facility you think Council should give its priority to.

One particular project nearing completion following an LTCCP process is the Albany Lakes Civic Park. The park comprises of a stormwater detention system, gardens, an art bridge as well as wetland and amenity planting. A stage and amphitheatre are also underway for community events

The park is expected to be fully operational by Spring 2009.

The LTCCP process gives members of the community an opportunity to have their say on how North Shore City can be an even better place to live, work and play. If you are not able to attend the Open Day, Council would still like your feedback.
The draft plan and feedback form is available online at www.northshorecity.govt.nz/cityplan, from libraries and area offices or by calling Actionline on 486 8600.

Submissions close on 24 April.
