Auckland City Council invites investigation by Auditor-General

Auckland City Council is to call in the Auditor-General to put to rest an ongoing investigation into footpath renewal works – an issue dating back to 2005.

Chief Executive David Rankin said the council had completed a full review of an ongoing issue dating back to 2005. At the centre of concern is alleged overpayments to a footpath contractor.

“It is a matter of public confidence that we now open our doors to the Auditor-General who can independently review the matter,” he said.

“This is a historic issue which has been protracted and costly to examine. We have completed a full and thorough investigation by accessing as much documentation and evidence as is available; and remain satisfied there is no evidence of wrong-doing by any party or individual,” he said.

“We think it is now time to put the matter to rest by inviting the Auditor-General to independently assess all claims and allegations.”

The Auckland City Council is finalising its final audit paper on the matter, for release to the public early next week.
