Transforming Tamaki through collaboration
Auckland City Council along with central government agencies today announced plans to significantly develop the Tamaki area.
The Tamaki Transformation Programme is a long-term collaborative approach to providing better housing, infrastructure, social services, employment prospects and economic growth in Glen Innes, Panmure and Point England.
Mayor of Auckland city Hon. John Banks said that the plans would secure Tamaki’s future as a quality urban community and area of economic growth.
“I’m pleased to see that central government has also recognised Tamaki’s potential and we are working together. “
Mr Banks says the programme is great news for the people of Tamaki and for wider Auckland.
“The council is committed to investing in Tamaki and the Transformation Programme will increase the rate of change that can be achieved,” says Mr Banks.
The council’s chair of the City Development committee, Cr Aaron Bhatnagar says the programme is a great opportunity for local and central government to work closely together with the community to make a difference.
“Our hope is that the programme will come up with innovative approaches that will become a model for a more effective way of working with communities,“ says Cr Bhatnagar.
Auckland City Council has put significant resources into planning how growth in the area can be managed and into implementing the infrastructure to support future economic and population growth in the area.
Council staff with specialist expertise will be seconded to the programme including a dedicated urban designer, an open space planner and a development engineer. Within the council a team of specialist technical advisors will provide advice on implementation as required.
“Tamaki is one of the fastest growing parts of the city and this programme will maximise the potential of this area. We will be putting some of our best staff to work on the project team and we will be closely following the outputs to ensure they are delivering the best outcomes for Tamaki and for Auckland,” says Cr Bhatnagar.
In addition to contributing resources and expertise to the Tamaki Transformation Programme, the Auckland City Council is planning to spend around $373.3 million over the next ten years in the Tamaki area including projects that deliver improved public transport connections, safer local roads, and improved employment opportunities.
