Wgtn Women's Refuge moves to meet growing demand

Press Release 8/5/09: For Immediate Release

Wellington Women's Refuge relocates to meet increasing demand:

Wellington Women's Refuge has moved! Their community office, which was in Willis Street is now located on level 3, 60 Ghuznee St, Wellington. This move was bought about in response to increasing demand for services, not only for day to day crisis work, but also for programmes. Wellington Women's Refuge continues to deal with more and more families and the capacity to meet the needs of these women and children were previously being limited by space restrictions.

Significantly the new office provides enough space for the children's programme, which was unable to be run in the smaller space. This programme provides essential support and encouragement for children who have witnessed/experienced domestic violence. Philippa Johnston, Woman and Children's advocate says "The new space is indispensable for a successful children's programme, it allows us to make sure the children come into a bright, safe, welcoming environment"

Wellington Women's refuge, in response to requests from the community, will also use the new space to expand and reach out to do more prevention/education work. With this goal in mind they have now employed a full time educator, Eleanor Butterworth. Ms Butterworth states " I'm really excited about our great new space, to really tackle domestic violence we need a space as accessible and well run as possible and this new office makes achieving this one step closer!"

It is hoped that the community will feel free to drop in and visit the new community office which is open from 9-5 Monday to Friday. The space is designed for the welcoming, support and education of women and children who have experienced domestic violence and we invite all Wellingtonians to visit and support the new venue. With an eye to accessibility all phone numbers and email addresses will remain the same in the new space.
