2009 Ride of Silence

Media Release
Monday 11 May 2009
2009 Ride of Silence

On Wednesday 20 May cyclists from more than 300 towns and cities throughout the World will join together to demonstrate their concern about cycling fatalities through the ‘Ride of Silence.’

The ride is an international event which was first started in 2003 in Dallas, Texas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was killed by a passing bus on an empty road. Since that time, the ride has developed into a global event and is now held in 18 countries.

Rodney has participated in the Ride since 2007. Although Rodney has experienced only 1 cycling fatality between 2003 and 2007, there have been many injuries and close calls. 18 cyclists have been recorded as being injured during this timeframe in Rodney, and it is likely there are many more incidents that have not been recorded.

“It’s vitally important that people are aware of the need to drive carefully when cyclists are on the roads – motorists need to share the road with others and be alert to anticipate what cyclists might do,” says Rodney Road Safety Coordinator Jacki Dawson.
The ride starts on Wednesday May 20 at 5.30 pm at Rodney District Council’s Offices in Centreway Road. The route will be via Centreway and Loop Roads, along the HBC Highway, Florence Ave, Hatton Road, Riverside Road and back to Centreway Road. The course distance is 4km.
“Cyclists, walkers and anyone else who would like to support the ride is welcome to join in, “says Jacki. “

There is no cost to participate in the event. Cyclists are asked to ride no faster than 20 kilometres per hour for up to an hour, and remain silent during the ride.

“The ride is designed to silently mourn cyclists who have been killed on our roads,” says Jacki.

Those participating are encouraged to wear black arm bands, or red armbands if people have been involved in a bike/motor vehicle accident.

Helmets & shoes must be worn and bright clothing and lights are recommended to improve visibility.

From 12 May there will also be a "Ride of Silence" display at the Council Offices in Orewa. Members of the public are welcome to leave a memorial or tribute to cyclists who have been killed on the roads.
