Mayor welcomes boy racer crackdown

New legislation announced by the Government today targeting boy racers has been welcomed by Hutt City Mayor David Ogden.

“Hutt City has a serious boy racer problem, as do many other cities in New Zealand, and I applaud the Government for taking the issue seriously.

“Every Thursday night hundreds of boy racers with their cars converge on Hutt City and disturb the peace and safety of our residents.

“Residents are fed up with their noisy and illegally modified cars, dangerous driving and anti-social behaviour.

To my frustration and that of residents, existing laws to address the problem have not worked because they are too weak.

“The measures outlined by the Government today send a strong message to boy racers that bad behaviour will no longer be tolerated.

“I look forward to the legislation becoming law,” said Mayor Ogden.
