Good News for Boulevard Businesses

MEDIA RELEASE
Orewa, 1st June 2009

Good News for Boulevard Businesses

If the weather is kind to contractors, Orewa’s waterfront retailers should see a return to business as usual as early as the end of June.

The Rodney District Council has announced that construction of the new Orewa Boulevard is ahead of schedule, with the end of June the new target date to reopen all intersections and the reinstatement of kerbside parking between Tamariki and Moana Avenues.

The end of September should see much of the heavy work move from shop-fronts to the beach side of the boulevard.
.
Further good news for shoppers and retailers is that the council is now estimating an additional 11 parking spaces in or near the boulevard once the project is completed.

The council’s director of infrastructure, Murray Noone, says this additional parking was found after what he termed a series of productive meetings between council’s traffic engineers, local businesses and Destination Orewa Beach.

He describes the provision of parking as having been a moveable feast with the final configuration largely determined by on-going consultation with those most affected.

“One thing we all agreed on was a determination to extract the maximum parking from the project, given safety, traffic flow and other factors,” says Mr Noone.

“I believe what we have come up with now, thanks to input from Destination Orewa Beach and contractors, does just that.”

Mr Noone says the entire project, with additional work and an extension of the boulevard to Moenui Avenue should be completed by Christmas at the latest.

Contractors are Fulton Hogan and Contrax Limited.
