Queenstown eyes up the future

Queenstown eyes up the future

Record snow levels at Queenstown ski areas and strong bookings from the Australian and domestic ski markets combined with the some of the cheapest ever air access to Queenstown has the local tourism industry cautiously optimistic about the short and medium term future.

Business confidence and investment in the resort has resulted in a range of developments opening for the winter ’09 season that significantly increase the tourism offering for domestic and international visitors.

The new Mountaineer building, housing iconic fashion brands such as Andrea Walker and Quiksilver, is scheduled to open its doors next month, as is the $18m Church Street development which will house a new 320 bed up-market backpackers.

Revitalised tourism businesses will also greet this season’s visitors with upgrades and capacity increase at the Skyline Gondola and Luge complex and significant ongoing capital expenditure at Coronet Peak and The Remarkables ski areas.

“Confidence in this region as a tourism destination remains hugely positive,” says Destination Queenstown CEO Stephen Pahl. “Queenstown is continuing to evolve as an appealing destination, with an ever increasing diversification of tourism product from a strong business community.”

“These developments and the confidence to deliver them enable Queenstown to continue to reinforce its positioning as Australasia’s premier lake and alpine resort destination, and to continue to compete as a world class destination in the international arena.”

Mr Pahl describes Queenstown as a sophisticated and diverse destination, evolving with the current economic climate.

“We’ve got so much to offer, adventure for all levels of excitement, relaxation, growing recognition for our sophisticated food and wine and a huge range of accommodation options to suit all budgets. Combine these elements against the stunning backdrop of the lake and mountains and we have an extremely compelling holiday proposition.”
