Zero general rates rise over next two years

For immediate release:11 June2009

Completion of its Ten Year Plan public submissions and hearings process means Environment Bay of Plenty can now confirm a zero percent rise in general rates over the next two years.

In Year Three of the plan, 2011/2012, general rates will rise by 2.3 percent.

“We have listened to our communities and that has meant we have made changes in some areas but I am pleased it has been possible to hold the general rate at its current level for the next two years,” said Environment Bay of Plenty Chairman John Cronin.

While general rates were kept at the lowest possible level, targeted rates will increase for specific areas of work including flood management and transport.

During the next three years, Council will spend $69.6 million on work in Year One, $83 million on work in Year Two and $100 million in Year Three.

“We are aware of tougher economic times facing all our communities and our aim has been to keep rates as affordable as possible,” Chairman Cronin said.

“To achieve that, we have been able to use our investments in the Port of Tauranga Ltd to offset rates increases, squeeze spending and push some work out to later years.

“Our spending priorities and work programme have met with general approval from ratepayers but where concerns have been expressed, we have listened to those concerns and made appropriate changes.”

Ratepayers made 199 submissions on the draft plan and completed 465 survey forms distributed through Environment Bay of Plenty’s bi-monthly “Backyard” newsletter.

The Ten Year Plan will be adopted at a council meeting on June 24.
