Banks scuttles Cruise Ship
Terminal and Rugby World Cup development
North Shore Mayor Andrew Williams is appalled to learn that Auckland City Mayor John Banks has scuttled the redevelopment of Queens Wharf as a focal point of cruise ship tourism and redevelopment for the Rugby World Cup 2011.
“Only last weekend John Key described John Banks as the “super mayor” of Auckland, and today we learn that he and his council have blocked the redevelopment of Queens Wharf and plans to construct a new cruise ship terminal,” Mayor Williams said.
“I’m one hundred percent behind John Key and Murray McCully in their efforts to try to get John Banks to see sense and come to the party.”
“John Banks played fast and loose over his council’s support for the Eden Park redevelopment, and now he is up to his old tricks again. John Banks is leading the chorus for the ‘super city’ but when it comes to putting his money where his mouth is, he gets laryngitis.
“John Banks needs to put
the interests of the greater Auckland community ahead of his
own political ambitions and the narrow self-interest of his
own council, and get in behind this cruise ship tourism and
Rugby World Cup legacy project,” Mayor Williams
said.
