Atiwhakatu hut open for business

The new Atiwhakatu hut in the eastern Tararua Forest Park is now open, offering warmth and comfort to people over-nighting in this popular outdoor location.

A wood burner and double glazed windows are features of the Department of Conservation 12-bed hut, a three hour walk from the Holdsworth Road-end, approximately 15 km from Masterton in Wairarapa.

DOC visitor assets programme manager Garry Foster says the hut is a “perfect destination for first-time trampers and families”.

“The walk takes you through the beautiful Atiwhakatu Valley alongside the stream where there’s suitable spots for swimming in the summer.

“And during the winter the fully insulated hut will be very comfortable for its guests.”

The Atiwhakatu valley is known for its native wildlife including tui, bellbirds, fantails, kaka, tomtits and riflemen. Visitors to the area can view rare mistletoe and long tailed bats have been seen in the area.

The hut is part of the Jumbo-Powell/Mt Holdsworth circuit, and just over the Pinnacle Saddle trampers can access the Mitre Flats hut.
