Demand for beds at Wellington’s Night Shelter is exceeding supply as record numbers of people seek emergency accommodation.
In May the Shelter saw more than double the occupancy rates from the same time last year and already June look to exceed these numbers.
Recently seven more beds had to be purchased to ensure people needing a bed actually got one.
Night Shelter Manager Mike Leon says, “We’re seeing the greatest demand in the 40 year history of the Night Shelter. It’s put pressure on all our resources too. We’re struggling to find enough blankets and have been met with higher electricity costs as we try and keep the guests warm”.
This Saturday in Cuba Mall there is a fundraiser drawing attention to the needs of the Night Shelter. Starting at midday, Tyler Ennis will auction off each of his dreadlocks to passers-by.
The Night Shelter needs blankets, toiletries, and financial donations.
Downtown Community Ministry Director, and Chair of the Wellington Night Shelter Trust Board, Stephanie McIntyre says, “There couldn’t be a better time to give our support to this much needed facility”.
