Queens Wharf must meet cruise ship industry needs

Queens Wharf must meet cruise ship industry needs
19 June 2009

Any redevelopment of Queens Wharf must meet the cruise ship industry’s needs, ARC Chairman Mike Lee said today.

“The ARC has been working with the cruise ship industry for well over a year to understand the industry’s current and future needs.

“We are keen to work with Auckland City Council to ensure what is developed on Queens Wharf is fit for purpose and promotes public access, while not costing an excessive amount of public money.

“The ARC is not confident that Auckland City Council’s current proposal – retaining the two present wharf sheds – will meet the cruise ship industry’s needs, now or in the future.”

Mr Lee said as joint owner of Queens Wharf, the ARC will need to approve any redevelopment plans.

“The ARC has committed significant money to enable Queens Wharf to be opened up to the public. It is vital we achieve an attractive and effective design that Aucklanders can be proud of.”
