Project ahead of schedule for milestone in spite of inclement weather
Recent stormy weather hasn’t put a dampener on excellent progress on the SH2 Dowse to Petone Upgrade project with another stage of the Korokoro intersection’s construction being reached earlier than originally scheduled.
NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) Wellington Regional Director Deborah Hume says the project is working like a well oiled machine and as a result the SH2 northbound lanes will move onto their new, permanent route on Monday, subject to suitable weather conditions.
“In spite of recent downpours the great planning, fantastic teamwork and good weather till June means the D2P project is ready for the next traffic switch earlier than we thought,” says Dr Hume.
In order to complete construction of the new retaining wall south of Korokoro bridge, the northbound lanes will split just before the pedestrian footbridge. The right-hand lane will continue on the new road with the left-hand northbound lane shifting back to its current position. The free left-hand turn at Korokoro will remain, as will the temporary traffic signals at the new Korokoro overbridge intersection.
“Motorists should use this left-hand lane to access Korokoro from SH2 northbound,” Dr Hume says.
At the same time, the exit from the Park ‘n’ Ride car park will change to its new, permanent route across the McKenzie Avenue bridge. Commuters will travel over the bridge, turn left onto Pito-One Road, left into Priests Avenue and left again onto SH2, remaining in the left-hand lane if they wish to go to Korokoro or Petone.
“Just remember – left, left then left again!”
The change will be announced on radio traffic bulletins and will also be advised to road users using electronic signs. Korokoro residents have had a letter and route map dropped into their letter boxes.
