Wellington's "Project Runway" complete

Wellington International Airport Limited (WIAL) has completed another major infrastructure project – the runway overlay - on time and on budget, bringing investment in runway quality and safety to a total of $42m.

The recently completed $11m runway overlay project fully resurfaced the 1,945 meter runway. The renewal of the runway surface takes place approximately every 12 years. The last full overlay was carried out over the summer of 1995-1996.

WIAL has also invested $31m in 90m safety extensions (RESAs) at both ends of the runway. The RESAs were completed in July 2007, well in advance of the new Civil Aviation Authority 2011 regulatory safety requirement and in line with international safety standards.

“These runway projects are a significant investment in community infrastructure. At Wellington Airport, we are committed to investing in quality infrastructure which meets or exceeds safety standards.” said WIAL CEO, Steven Fitzgerald.

There were a number of challenges in working around a fully operational airport, including the requirement for all works to be carried out at night during the airport’s curfew to prevent significant disruption to airline scheduling. Airline cooperation in adherence to flight schedules allowed the work to be completed on time and on budget.

In preparing for the project, WIAL worked closely with the Wellington City Council and its contractor, Fulton Hogan, to ensure works caused minimal disturbance to its neighbours. Acoustic engineers provided expert advice on how to mitigate noise and practical measures ensured noise generated by this project was reduced to a minimum.

Southern RESA wins award

Wellington Airport’s runway safety extension project has won a New Zealand industry award for excellence in engineering.

Wellington Airport’s Southern Runway End Safety Area (RESA) project received a Merit Innovate NZ 2009 Award of Excellence at the Association of Consulting Engineers New Zealand Inc. (ACENZ) Awards 2009 held over the weekend.

The Award recognised innovative engineering approaches undertaken by engineering firm Beca and Wellington International Airport Limited (WIAL) during the design and construction phases of the $23.5m project.
